The Berserkjahraun lava field is approximetely 4000 year old. Its sources are four differently sized scoria craters forming an east-west row from Kerlingarskarð Ogress Pass. The lava is very bushy and difficult to traverse. It was a hindrance to the country based around it. There are now three roads over it. Before the road was started through the lava, people had to walk or ride south of the lava and the hill above Seljavallavatn The most famous route is Berserkjahraun Path , which leads to Bjarnarhöfn, if we can trust the storytelling Eyrbyggja Saga. Berserkjahraun Path is probably the oldest structure of its kind in the country and beyond.
